Before the new year Pinterest made a big announcement: Promoted Pins will begin to become more widely available to all advertisers in 2015!
Awesome news! This opens up numerous opportunities for advertisers to connect with the some 70 million active Pinterest users.
So here’s a quick break down of what you need to know:
- Promoted Pins will appear as any other pin within a user’s feed however, they will be labeled “Sponsored”
- Users will be given the option to hide the ad and provide feedback by simply clicking an “X” in the lower right hand corner of the Promoted Pin
- Advertisers can target pins by location, gender, and specific tags or topics
- Advertisers will only pay per click on the Promoted Pin
So while this news is very exciting, all brands need to stop and ask themselves: Is it the right move for them?
As with all social media strategy, content is key. I think this is even more important on Pinterest. Users specifically go to the site to look for interesting articles and advice such as delicious recipes and unique crafts (just to name two of my Pinterest favorites!) Since a Promoted Pin will essentially look like an un-promoted pin, the type and quality of content your are paying to promote is extremely important. If your content is interesting and fits the selected targeting, then your ad will receive a great deal of valuable engagement and website clicks.
Currently, there is a waitlist for Promoted Pins. However, be on the lookout throughout 2015 to see how this may or may not impact users’ engagement on Pinterest.
